Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi has met his Angolan counterpart João Lourenço on the sidelines of the nation’s 64th independence day celebrations held on Sunday, 30th June 2024.

The meeting has considered to be significant in the quest to restore peace in eastern DR Congo as Tshisekedi is likely set to meet Rwandan President Paul Kagame to negotiate for the end of tensions between the two countries.

President Lourenço, the African Union (AU) appointed facilitator of peace in the DRC, expressed his desire to intensify peace actions in Eastern Congo, a region plagued by insecurity for several years.

Tshisekedi warmly welcomed his desire to invest in peace and development with a meeting with Kagame likely set to be scheduled in the coming weeks.

Tshisekedi’s meeting with President Lourenço in Kinshasa, as well as the several messages of support and solidarity from the international community, offer a ray of hope for the future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
