The spokesperson for the Congolese army, Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, announced this Sunday that the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have foiled a coup d’état. In a brief message broadcast on public television, he specified that several perpetrators of this act had been arrested.

“The army reassures that the situation is under control and asks the people of Kinshasa to freely go about their business,” declared General Ekenge.

“While awaiting an elaborate communication on the incidents which took place in the commune of Gombe on the night of this Sunday, May 19, 2024, we would like to reassure the national and international community that our defense and security forces have restored, with promptness, public order disrupted by armed men. The population is therefore called upon to remain calm and freely go about their business,” declared Peter Kazadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.
